Programme

ixia’s work is categorised under the following headings:
- Research: we undertake research and develop partnerships with key public and private sector organisations to improve the understanding of current public art practice. See Research;
- Training and Development: we support better working relationships between artists and other professions engaged in the development of the public realm and facilitate the exchange of information and experience regarding public art. See Events and Training;
- Dialogue: we commission and publish new writing to stimulate discussion and debate about public art. See New Writing and Publications.
ixia’s work is informed by factors that shape how artists engage with the public realm. Currently, these include:
- The ongoing critical debate regarding the intrinsic and instrumental values of public art;
- The evidence-based approach to the development and implementation of UK government policy;
- The UK government’s Sustainable Communities Plan;
- An apparent increase in the commissioning of public art through regeneration projects and its relationship with the national, regional and local planning and development control process;
- Absence of public art policy guidelines from arts funding bodies and others;
- An ad-hoc support structure for public art, which is mainly provided by a mix of funding bodies, public art agencies, public art consultants and local authorities;
- Public understanding of artistic practice;
- Globalisation and communications technology reshaping traditional notions of identity, public space and community.
ixia provides an objective view of the factors that impact on the quality of public art in order to address these issues.
We welcome feedback about our programme and are pleased to discuss opportunities for collaboration with partners with an interest in the field.
